Counseling-4-College provides a student-centered experience with an individualized approach that provides structure during the college admissions process. We guide individuals and help them with choices of colleges. Once there is an appropriate college list, we walk the student through the application process. Whether there is a need for a college prep plan for finishing high school, testing strategies, help with writing a good college essay, or financial aid and scholarship information, we're here to offer professional advice.

Meet The Founder and Principal, John Happs
A recognized expert in post-secondary education, John has a genuine passion for preparing students and their parents to achieve their college admission goals. He has spent 39 years as an educator, counselor, and is a professional, independent educational consultant. He has been featured in the media and is frequently called upon to address parent and teacher groups nationwide. Most of his clients reside in Louisville, Superior, Lafayette, Erie, Brighton, Thornton, Longmont, Broomfield and Boulder, Colorado.

John holds an M.A. in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Colorado, is a former, post-secondary guidance counselor from Centaurus High School (Dept. Chair for 10 years), a national consultant for College Summit, a senior consultant in Colorado for the implementation of the Colorado Counselor Corps Grant, works with and presents for the Colorado Department of Education, and is an adjunct professor for the University of Colorado, Denver.


Meet Vic Davolt
Vic draws on over 30 years of experience in selective higher education admissions and financial aid, high school college counseling, and higher education consulting, to guide students and parents through the many, and not always obvious, value components of a strong college fit. He served as director of admission at three colleges/universities and provides that perspective for families to understand how admission decisions are made.


His background offers families:

  • Guidance for students in discovering best-fit options at places where they will thrive, and be valued for what they bring to a college's community
  • Support to help minimize the stress of the college admission process for students already heavily taxed with demanding academic and extracurricular schedules
  • Expertise with best-practices and state-of-the-arts tools for building and researching the college list

  • Discernment of a college's basis for admissions at colleges and universities nationally that are most selective in their admission decisions
  • Recognition of the geographic nuances of colleges and their features coast to coast
  • Advice for best practices for college admission and scholarship essay content and editing
  • Direction identifying resources for sound SAT/ACT/Subject testing strategies
  • Guidance to resources in determining how colleges view a family's finances; estimators, FAFSA, CSS Profile and insight into college financial aid packaging practices
  • Counsel for special feature filters, e.g., service and/or faith-based missions, athletics, fine/applied arts; degree abroad in Canada and the UK
  • Extensive experience with faith and service mission-related colleges nationally
  • Analysis of assessment tools for identifying good fit college majors and career occupations, as well as learning styles
  • Support and guidance for students with physical and learning differences such as deaf/hard-of-hearing, autism, and ADHD
  • Support and guidance for at-promise and under-represented first-generation students and special populations, e.g., Foster Children, Homeless Youth and DACA
